These beautiful flowers are known as “Saxifrage or sometimes referred to as “rock-breakers. They grow in the crevices of solid rocks where it sends its tiny roots up from the soil and around the rock. As the root begins to grow, it becomes so strong and so powerful, that it can literally crack the rock – hence the name rock-breaker. When I came across this flower I just had to see what it looked like, there are many beautiful colors that they come in and they are perfect for rock gardens. Flowers are God’s creations and He has done a magnificent job.
This got me thinking about the strong roots that have taken hold in some of our lives and how we are not really aware that roots are there. I, too, have had to make a spring cleaning of myself many times, thinking that I had dealt with that root or this root but I didn’t put an ax to the roots. I have found that it’s not something that is done overnight, there is no magical formula nor any words that you can say to make them die. What you need is to have a spiritual surgery that only God can direct. It is only through His work in us that we are able to permanently destroy these roots.
In the beginning of my walk with God, I began to study/read God’s Word daily, I was so hungry for the Word I would spend hours reading it. At the same time, I would get so convicted, to the point that I would close the Bible and set it aside for a few hours or a day or two, because I felt that I had every right to feel the way I felt. But God in His wonderful way kept drawing me back to see what He had to say. I was thinking doesn’t God knows how I was treated, and didn’t He see how they talked about me, didn’t He care how I was being rejected? This was me trying to rationalize my feelings of resentment and bitterness.
O my friends, God would not give up on me (thank you Father) and He won’t give up on you. He was truly tugging at my heart and calling me to get back in His Word and after many, many painful insights, I began to experience a lighter feeling. Coming to grips that my way of thinking was unpleasing and only causing me to remain bound to negative emotions were an eye opener for me. My load was being lifted, my roots that had kept me dragging my feet were being cut, I was standing a bit taller and walking a little lighter and my joy was coming back; O how I love my joy. Resentment, bitterness, anger, worry, depression and unforgiveness were all being cut at the root.
Now like I said this is not an overnight purging, sometimes it can take months even years before these roots are totally destroyed. To be honest I do have my days when I can get a bit angry, or begin to worry or have bitterness about something. But I choose to let the Holy Spirit have His way in me and to lead me in the Word, this is where I get the strength to do battle, and this is where your strength lies also.
The Word says: “But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too" [Mar 11:25 NLT]. This is the first instruction that convicted me, and trust me, I had a lot to say about it, but you know obedience is better than sacrifice, right. Unforgiveness is a root that can take some time to cut, but if you learn to leave it with God – don’t pick it up or try to help Him, then you will begin to see victory. This root is not an easy root to deal with but you must deal with it, if you allow yourself to be engulf by this roots you are living a defeated life, you are being held down and not walking in the liberty that Christ died to give you.
Unforgiveness, is a major root that carries with it bitterness, resentment, blame and retaliation. It can hinder your prayers from being answered, or cause you physical and emotional sickness or delaying His presence in situations. We need God’s forgiveness and if there is any unforgiveness hidden within our hearts believe me He will know it. You must truly repent and seek God’s forgiveness and you must forgive others as well as forgive yourself for holding the grudge. Your roots may not be like mine, but I strongly encourage you to ask God to search your hearts and to reveled anything that does not please Him and repent for holding onto whatever it is.
Turn to God, plea for His help and ask for His forgiveness, and let Him strengthen you as you walk the path to forgiveness. Let His love envelope you while you lay your burdens down, let Him heal your brokenness, your bruise’s, and your hurt, let Him take away the pain that runs so deep that only by His hand can this root be cut. It is not in your strength but in the strength of the LORD that you will find the peace that only He can give.
